Extended stay hotels and suites are becoming a popular alternative for families traveling on tight budgets as well as for executives away from home on assignments spanning weeks or months. Quality, amenities and prices vary widely. These units are also attractive options for temporary corporate relocation accommodations. I have stayed at most of the suites listed below. Here is a quick overview of the most popular extended stay options available.
Candlewood - Part of the Hotel Intercontinental Group, Candlewood has 190 properties in the United States and Canada. All units are equipped with full kitchens.
Comfort Suites - If low room rates are your priority this would be the best option.
Embassy Suites - This massively popular chain, now part of Hilton Corporation, is perfect for family gatherings and group getaways. Children love the indoor pool and the complimentary made-to-order breakfast is a treat for all. Having said that, I find them a bit too noisy for business travel.
Extended Stay America - Part of the HVM Corporation, they are promoted as a home away from home at affordable rates. They operate over 650 long-term hotels in the United States and Canada.
Hawthorn - Part of the Wyndam Hotel Group, Hawthorn is a franchise operation. I must admit I have avoided them because quality can vary greatly from one operation to the next.
Homewood Suites by Hilton - Being a member of the Hilton family, Homewood is on the higher end of the long-term lodging scale. For frequent travelers will delight in getting HHonors points. Another benefit is the ability to select and reserve a specific room on from their website. The downside is their booking engine can crawl at a snail’s pace at times.
Residence Inn by Marriott - Another option especially if your family is staying with you is Residence Inn. They have one and two bedroom units and studios with separate eating, sleeping, cooking and work areas. I particularly like the fully equipped kitchens and a full size refridgerator. their complimentary shopping service is helpful if you are new to the area.
Staybridge Suites - This brand, also a member of Hotel Intercontinental Group, is focused on the business traveler. They heavily promote their amenities for group meetings. Staybridge has sites around the world.
